Ground or finely chopped lamb provides a robust, earthy savor with a hint of gamey richness. It’s a meat that pairs uncommonly well with herbs like thyme and rosemary and offers a depth of savor that few other meats can rival. Its richness works as a unrelatedness to the sweetness of the gnocchi.

Mushrooms, expressly when sautéed to a golden brown, add an umami, meaty quality to the dish. Their earthy savor complements both the lamb and the thyme, and their slightly chewy texture is a wonderful juxtaposition to the soft gnocchi.

Thyme, with its lemony, slightly minty aroma, is the whiffy herb that ties all these flavors together. It enhances the gamey notes of the lamb, elevates the earthiness of the mushrooms, and harmonizes beautifully with the sweet potato.

A simple sauce made of uneaten virgin olive oil and butter creates a silky, slick stratify for the gnocchi and other ingredients.
